Papers, 1872-1927.

This collection of papers is almost entirely comprised of copies of patent drawings. The collection contains patent drawings for games, firearms, wrenches, and a variety of miscellaneous items. There are a number of patent drawings and photographs of labeling machinery connected with the Economic Machinery Company and invented by Frank O. Woodland. Also, there are numerous patent drawings connected with the Washburn & Moen Manufacturing Company which concern the improved production of wire. These particular drawings represent the creative efforts of Edwin S. Lenox and Fred Harris Daniels (1853-1913). In addition, the collection includes: documents and papers relating to interference cases in which Frank O. Woodland and Edwin S. Lenox were defendants. Also, the collection includes: several specifications of patents; some correspondence from Lenox to Burleigh, mostly on proposals for improving machinery; and petitions concerning the application for or the declaration of a patent.

Charles Hartwell Burleigh (1842-1929), son of John Oscar and Evelina Moore Burleigh, was born in Oxford, Mass. After obtaining some public school education, he enlisted in the Union Army of 1862. In 1866, he came to Worcester, Mass., and for about three years was in the employ of Elbridge Boyden ( -1898), architect; and for some four years in the office of Thomas H.
